Approved Mental Health Professional Advanced Practitioner

This role, at a glance

Role Overview

Our Approved Mental Health Professional Advanced Practitioners play a vital role in supporting adults and children experiencing mental health difficulties across Milton Keynes. Working within our Mental Health service, they lead on complex assessments, make critical decisions under mental health legislation and work closely with health partners, emergency services and other agencies to safeguard individuals and ensure they receive the support they need. The role combines expert professional knowledge with strong decision-making and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for people and their families.

The role involves undertaking Mental Health Act assessments, managing complex cases and, where appropriate, making applications for compulsory admission to hospital. Advanced Practitioners assess and manage risk, coordinate multi-agency responses and ensure the safety of everyone involved in the assessment process. They are responsible for delivering effective case management, maintaining accurate records, monitoring service quality and contributing to continuous improvement across the service.

A key part of the role is providing professional leadership and support to colleagues, including mentoring Approved Mental Health Professional trainees and promoting best practice. Advanced Practitioners build strong relationships with partner organisations, contribute to strategic and operational developments and ensure their practice reflects current legislation, professional standards and Milton Keynes City Council's values of being Dedicated, Respectful and Collaborative.
